So what is the difference between Private Hire and a Taxi?

Private Hire

Private Hire are Pre-Booked bookings, made by any means ie Telephone, Text, Messenger, Social Media etc.

A Private Hire vehicles are not allowed to sit at Taxi Ranks or be hailed in the street by anyone, only pre-booked fares are permitted

Private Hire fares are whatever is agreed between the customer and the Private Hire company or driver

Taxi

A Taxi can pick up fares hailed on the street, from Taxi Ranks or bookings made through their taxi office, and pre-booked bookings.

Taxi fares are metered and fixed rates as per tariffs set by The Council Taxi Licensing Department.

The correct Tariff should be applied as per time of day the Licence Authority has laid down
